In an event wherein emergency personnel are activated, it is the number one goal to arrive at the scene in a safe and timely manner. In order to do so, it is imperative for motorists sharing the roadways to be aware of their surroundings in order to not create any other emergency situations. When an emergency vehicle is responding to a call, they will use lights and/or sirens to notify the public and other motorists of an emergency situation. If you are on the roadway, you need to immediately pull to the right side of the road and allow for a clear path for such emergency vehicle to pass safely. If you are a pedestrian, do not enter into the roadway where the emergency vehicle is traveling and/or do not approach the emergency scene, thereby allowing the emergency personnel to properly respond to the call and render the necessary services.

A few places to check for updates and/or messages are local media channels and websites. Carter County offers a free signup for the Nixle Alert System, wherein you will receive alerts relating to emergency events happening in Carter County. You can find the free signup link on the Carter County Sheriff’s webpage www.cartercountysheriff.us. The United States Department of Homeland Security has an app available for wireless emergency alerts. The types of alerts the app will notify you about include, but are not limited to, extreme weather (i.e. tornado, flash flooding) and/or other threatening emergency alerts in your local area, AMBER Alerts and Presidential alerts during a national emergency. Additionally, most local news stations offer an app with alerts of local emergency situations and weather updates.

During an emergency multiple cross-functional agencies may be activated depending on the severity of the situation. Local, County, State and Federal law enforcement will work together with any other necessary agency in order to remedy and aid the situation in the most effective and timely manner.  Such other agencies may include fire departments, ambulance and medi-flight services. Each responding agency will have a designated person for communication purposes to give updates to media and the general public.
