LONE GROVE — It’s not often Sulphur or Lone Grove softball lose two district games in a season.

However, one of these trends had to end on Tuesday afternoon, as the Lady Bulldogs and Lady Horns battled it out to see who would slide into second place in district 4A-3.

Ultimately, it was two innings of scoring by the Lady Horns which proved to be the difference, as Lone Grove defeated Sulphur 7-2, moving to 4-1 in district play and 8-3 overall.

Sulphur meanwhile fell to 10-4 and 2-2 in district play.

After two innings of scoreless softball, Lone Grove was given a lifeline in the bottom of the third.

Logan Graves hit a pop fly which resulted in an error, allowing Malea McMurtrey to score, putting Lone Grove ahead.

Emmy Guthrie would later slap an RBI single down the third base line to double the advantage, before Paige Anderson made it 3-0 with an RBI single to left.

It wouldn’t be until the bottom of the fifth before the Lady Horns struck again, when Abbi Atkinson registered a fielders choice RBI, before Mariah Moiser also got a fielders choice RBI to make it 5-0.

Logan Ketchum hit a sacrifice fly RBI, before Emily Burns finished off the inning with an RBI single to center.

Sulphur did manage to get two runs back in the sixth when Kinlee Duck collected an RBI double to right, while Ally Dixon got an RBI single to right.

Emmy Guthrie took the win in the circle for Lone Grove, throwing a complete game. She allowed five hits with one walk and five strikeouts.

Harley Beesley took the loss for Sulphur, allowing five hits with two walks and two strikeouts.

Sulphur will be back in action Thursday against Tishomingo, while Lone Grove will be at home  vs. the Davis Lady Wolves.
