Despite a sudden change in their schedule, the Lone Grove Longhorns seemed prepared Thursday night against Pauls Valley at Thompson Field.

However, despite an early 14-0 lead the Longhorns couldn’t keep the Panthers down, eventually dropping their district opener 36-22.

JJ Barnes got the scoring started for Lone Grove in the first quarter when he raced 20-yards for the touchdown on Lone Grove’s opening offensive drive.

After Lone Grove’s Matt Thornberry recovered a fumble on defense to halt Pauls Valley on its opening drive, Barnes struck again, this time going for 66-yards, giving Lone Grove a 14-0 lead.

However, Pauls Valley came back with a pair of rushing touchdowns in the second quarter to tie the game at 14-14.

The Panthers would eventually take a 22-14 lead in the third quarter, before Barnes put Lone Grove back in the game with his third touchdown of the evening.

This time Barnes went 60-yards for the score, evening the game at 22-22.

Unfortunately, the Longhorns’ momentum didn’t carry over into the fourth quarter as the Panthers regained the lead thanks to a 50-yard touchdown run from quarterback Jack Grimmett to make it a 29-22 score.

Grimmett would add another late touchdown to seal the victory.

Barnes finished with 228 yards rushing with three touchdowns

Lone Grove (0-4, 0-1) will be back in action at 7 p.m. Friday night against Douglass.
