Now that the weather is beginning to turn cooler it is officially soup season in downtown Ardmore. Soup aficionados will get an additional opportunity to sample homemade soups next week when Legal Aid of Services of Oklahoma will be hosting their “Soup-er United Way Fundraiser.”
The event will take place on Thursday, Oct. 18 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church. Tickets are $6 and include soup, bread, a drink and dessert. They are available for advanced purchase at the Legal Aid Services office located at 14 E St. Southwest or can be purchased at the door. All proceeds will go to the United Way of Southern Oklahoma.
More than 15 different varieties of soup will be available, and several United Way Partner Agencies will be bringing soup to the event.  Though the meal includes one bowl, guests are encouraged to sample a variety and vote for their favorite. A panel of three judges will also be on site to select the overall best soup.
While Legal Aid has been a United Way Partner Agency for several years and have assisted other agencies at their fundraisers, this is the first event they will be sponsoring.
“We thought this would be a great way for people who are working to come by and grab a quick lunch while raising funds for a wonderful organization” said Yolanda Gay, paralegal at Legal Aid Services.
In addition to all funds raised going to United Way, any left over soup will be sent to the Grace Center of Southern Oklahoma to help feed their clients.
“That was one of the things that was most important to me,” Gay said. “I wanted to be sure nothing went to waste, and the Grace Center said they had a way to store the leftovers.”
Gay pointed out that multiple agencies coming together to help one another is an excellent example of the work United Way does for the community.
“All the different agencies each bring something different to the table, and it’s always nice to get together and learn more about all the things they do.”
