What started as a dispute over a coat ended with an arrest and felony charges Wednesday.
Steven K. Shepard, 20, was arrested after allegedly kicking his way into his 13-year-old ex-girlfriend’s home and assaulting her.
Police Chief Gus Handke said Shepard came to the house but was refused entry by the girl. Handke said damage to the door frame showed where Shepard kicked the door down to get inside. Witnesses said once he was inside, Shepard choked the girl, and took her cell phone as he was leaving so she couldn’t call the police.
Shepard was later arrested and identified by witnesses on the scene .
After a series of interviews, Shepard was charged with first degree rape and first degree burglary.
Shepard faces possibly no less than 5 years imprisonment for the first-degree rape charge, and 7 to 20 years imprisonment for the first-degree burglary charge. He is set to go before a judge on Feb. 16.
