DOT Foods employee Josh Runge operates a Narrow Aisle, or reach truck, Wednesday during a skills competition at the DOT Foods warehouse. Part of the skills test was keeping the basketball on the trash can while maneuvering as fast as possible through a set up pathway.

Employees of Dot Foods and their families came out for a rodeo Wednesday night, but there was nary a bull nor bronco in sight.

Instead, the “cowboys” drove forklifts and scooted around pallet jacks.

Dot Foods employees competed in the Ardmore finals for the company’s third annual National Forklift Rodeo, at the Dot Foods distribution center in Ardmore.

Warehouse employees faced off in competitions for three different equipment types –– forklifts, pallet jacks and narrow-aisle reach trucks.

The winners of each competition go on to compete at the national level at Dot’s Grand National Forklift Rodeo Finals in Mt. Sterling, Ill., on June 25.

The prizes at the national competition include seven different vacation packages, including trips to Las Vegas, Disneyland or a Mexican cruise.

Penni Wilson at Dot Foods said that the rodeo is something the employees look forward every year since its inception.

“It’s to promote safe and efficient use of the equipment,” Wilson said.

The contestants moved through a timed obstacle course while carrying a basketball balanced atop a trash can. They were penalized for dropping the ball, safety violations or moving out of the course boundaries.

Joeseph McCullogh of Lone Grove posted the fastest time on the narrow aisle reach truck, earning his shot at finals. Cindy Young of Marietta won the forklift competition, and Lyle Koop of Kingston won the pallet jack competition.

“I’ve never been, so I’m looking forward to it,” said Koop of the trip to the finals in Illinois. “I think I have a pretty good shot.”
