Sulphur, OK —

The Oklahoma School for the Deaf Academic Team brought home second-place honors in the Great Plains Schools for the Deaf Academic Tournament recently conducted in Faribault, Minn.

OSD team members who participated were seniors, Wendi O’Connor, Matt Payne and Chelsie Stallings, and juniors, Whitlé Jackson and Kailob Miller.

The students are coached by Deborah Ulery and Terry Dobson.

“The tournament included students from schools for the deaf in eight states,” Ulery said. “Going into the championship round, we had 65 points and Kansas, who was in second place, had 36. Although OSD lost 8 to 12 to Kansas in the championship game, we finished the tournament with the highest total points and the most wins of any team in the tournament.”

This is the first year OSD advanced to the final round. The Academic Team finished the season with nine wins and four losses.

The Oklahoma School for the Deaf in Sulphur provides educational services free of charge to students who are deaf and hard of hearing.
