Madill, OK —

A local resident wound up playing swapout in an obvious telephone scam.

Madill Police Chief James Fullingim said the citizen notified police about a telephone call from a woman identifying herself as a Social Security representative. She then began asking for personal information — correct address, date of birth, etc. The conversation ended abruptly at “...your bank account number.”

The citizen hung up without responding.

Fullingim said the phone rang again moments later. The original caller asked the resident why he’d hung up. The resident asked to be connected to the caller’s supervisor. This time the caller hung up without answering.

“Don’t give out any personal information,” Fullingim said about telephone calls asking for personal information. “Not even your name. Just hang up.”

The police chief said pertinent personal information is already on file with agencies such as the Social Security Administration or Internal Revenue Service and residents should be suspicious of calls asking for such information. Such calls should be reported to the nearest police department or sheriff’s office.
