A new tropical fish shop in Duncan — Mondo Aquatics, located at 118 S. 10th St. — offers more than just fish.

The store not only will offer a series of free workshops, owners also have formed a club for aquatics lovers in Duncan, Ardmore and Lawton.

Beginning at 1 p.m. Saturday, the store will offer its free educational workshops and seminars.
The first in the series, titled “So You Want to Start a Saltwater Aquarium?” is designed with the novice in mind and will explain the basic ins and outs of saltwater aquaria.

Areas covered include tank sizes, simple water chemistry, proper filtration, lighting and livestock.
The folks at Mondo Aquatics hope that locals already experienced with saltwater aquariums will also attend to help share their knowledge and experiences with beginners. This presents an opportunity to network and make new friends with similar interests.

Immediately following the workshop, Mondo Aquatics will host the inaugural meeting of the Duncan-Ardmore-Lawton Aquarium Society. The meeting is expected to begin at approximately 3 p.m.

The club is open to singles, families and interested children, with parental permission. Folks are encouraged to stay for this meeting and join the club.

DALAS’s goal is to bring aquarium enthusiasts — both freshwater and saltwater — together to share knowledge, experience and comradeship related to the fish keeping hobby. Eventually, the club hopes to bring in monthly speakers, based on the membership’s interests, and to hold events such as swaps and auctions.

The club is also a way to spark a child’s interest in something fun yet educational and scientific.
Following the meeting, there will be drawing for prizes including Mondo Aquatics’ grand prize of a $50 gift certificate from their Grand Opening Celebration.

Other prizes include aquarium accessories, T-shirts and more. To ask questions, call Mondo Aquatics at (580) 475-0617 or online at http://www.mondoaquatics.com.
