The Chamber’s annual Festival of Lights Auction is scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 10, at the Ardmore Convention Center. The silent auction begins at 5 and ends at 6:40 p.m. The live auction starts at 7 p.m. More information on items to be auctioned will be forthcoming as the auction approaches. Proceeds from the auction help fund the Regional Park’s Christmas Light Drive-Thru Display. The auction is a fun event, proceeds go toward a great community venue and event, and it keeps dollars at home — which is increasingly important in today’s economy.
No matter where you shop, you pay sales tax. When you spend your dollars in Ardmore it not only supports the community, it benefits you as well. Shopping locally means that 48 percent of the sales tax you pay in Ardmore stays here to support police and fire protection, streets, parks, water and sewer services and new jobs. Shopping out of town supports those services in other communities. Shopping at home and with locally owned stores makes sense in a variety of ways.
The Institute of Local Self-Reliance published a study of the local economic impacts of big-box chain retailers versus locally owned stores. The study found that chain stores return 14.1 percent of their sales to the local economy versus a 53.3 percent return from local stores.
Consumer Reports magazine conducted a year-long pharmacy survey of 32,000 people. The majority of respondents preferred locally owned independent pharmacies in terms of providing personal attention, offering health services, price and value, filling prescriptions quickly and supplying out of stock medications within 24 hours. And based on studies cited earlier, locally owned pharmacies also generate more local economic activity.
The Consumer Reports study no doubt applies to other retail sectors as well. Shopping with local merchants and locally owned stores not only makes sense for shoppers, it is good for our community and our economy.
Come join the many volunteers who have coordinated an excellent Festival of Lights auction this year and help us kick off a successful shop at home program.
