Overview

Newspapers in Education (NIE) is a nationwide cooperative effort between schools, businesses and local newspapers to promote literacy and improve test scores. For over ten years The Ardmoreite's NIE program has been supplying free newspapers to schools in Carter, Jefferson, Johnston, Love, Marshall and Murray counties.

Every Wednesday during the school year, classrooms receive 25 newspapers so that each student has their own copy.

The Newspapers in Education program is supported through local businesses who underwrite the cost of putting newspapers in the classroom. Sponsoring a classroom has far reaching effects. For some families, a daily newspaper is a financial hardship and the classroom is literally the only place a student comes into contact with this medium. At the end of the school day most teachers allow the students to take the paper home to their parents and other siblings who also use the paper for homework assignments. One classroom sponsorship goes a L-O-N-G way!

Upcoming Mini Page Issues

Issue 5
For release: Feb. 4-10
Exoplanets
In the last two years, NASA's Kepler mission has discovered more than 1,200 exoplanets candidates, or what are believed to be planets outside our solar system. Until a few years ago, we knew of no other planets outside our own system. Now we've found marvels such as a planet made of diamond, a planet with an atmosphere as dark as coal, and a planet with two suns, like "Star Wars'" Tatooine. The Mini Page hitches a ride beyond our solar system to explore these strange new worlds.

Issue 6
For release Feb. 11-17
Be Kind, Be Mine!
Valentine's Day is about more than romance. It's also Random Acts of Kindness Week. We'll learn more about how kids can spread kindness within their families, communities and at school.

Issue 7
For release Feb. 18-24
Neanderthals
Why did Neanderthals die off about 30,000 years ago while modern humans survived? Who were these people so like ourselves? Until a few years ago, scientists believed Neanderthals were a different species than modern humans. But scientists have recently discovered that Neanderthals and modern humans did mix socially. The Mini Page looks at what we now know about these mysterious people, some of whom were probably our ancestors.

Donations & Sponsorship

Generous sponsors allow NIE to serve local teachers and students in our 5-county service area. One hundred percent of your donation pays for newspapers at a discounted rate, allowing your NIE gift to buy at least twice as many papers for students that would be available at a non-NIE subscription rate. The Ardmoreite picks up the tab for the price difference, as well as the variety of NIE learning resources offered to help make the newspaper a powerful learning tool.

You can "Adopt a Class" for an entire year! If you have a favorite school that you would like to support, contact the NIE office for billing information.

NIE recognizes its sponsors in the following ways:

•Thank you ads in our newspaper

•Your name or business placed on our website

•A listing in our full page NIE Thank you page in May
