Virginia Dare Washington was born March 1, 1915, in Ardmore, to the union of Albert and Laura Nash Washington. She was the youngest of four: brothers, Charles and Louis, and sister Ellen.
She transitioned from this life on Thursday, Oct. 29, 2009, at the age of 94. Her parents and siblings preceded her in death, as well as uncles T.R. Nash, Mack Nash, and niece Annie Laura Johnson. She is survived by a niece, Helen McGee of Ardmore; two nephews, Charles Washington Jr. of Tulsa and Louis Washington Jr. of California; one aunt, Dola Mae Nash of Ardmore; and many grand, great and great-great nieces, nephews, cousins and dear, devoted friends.
Virginia was fondly and lovingly called VA by family and friends. She attended the public schools Dunbar Elementary and Douglass High School of Ardmore, and graduated in 1935. VA attended Langston University and received a B.S. degree in Elementary Education. After graduation, she embarked on a long teaching career. She worked in southeastern Oklahoma for a number of years, and also taught at Roosevelt, Lone Oak and Graham schools. Virginia was always concerned about the education of children and lovingly operated a kindergarten. In Ardmore City Schools, Virginia taught at Washington Elementary and Charles Evans Elementary. She retired after some 40 years in the teaching profession.
VA was baptized in the First Baptist Church at an early age, and maintained her membership there for her lifetime. With a steadfast and untiring devotion, she worked with the Ushers ministry, and was a dedicated member of the Lillie E. Terry Circle in the Mission.
Virginia was an avid Dallas Cowboys and OU football fan. She enjoyed watching these teams in action and also liked to watch the T.V. show Survivor.
