Margie L. “Pepper” Sands, 83, a resident of Shawnee, died Sunday, Jan. 31, 2010, at a local hospital. Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at the Walker Funeral Service Chapel. Interment will be at Rose Hill Cemetery, Ardmore, Okla.

Margie was born on Sept. 5, 1926, in Ardmore, Okla., to George Gilley and Margie Lou (Herndon) Gilley. She was married to Ted Thomas, later married Gene Sheets, and then Coy Burton. She attended East Central University in Ada, and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. She retired as a medical transcriptionist. She also worked several years at Mission Hill Hospital in Shawnee. At an early age she enjoyed life in community theater.

She was preceded in death by parents; son, Kevin Blane Sheets; husband, Coy Burton; brother, Bob “Bubba” Gilley; and sister, Ruth Ann Gilley Pendleton.

Margie Sands is survived by two daughters; Karen Lou Thomas Gault and husband, Kendall of Oklahoma City, Cheryl Lynn Thomas Owens of Shawnee; grandchildren, Troy Wayne Thomas, Malloree Brown Buchanan, Henry Morgan Brown III, Nathaniel Hayes and wife, Alli; great-grandchildren, Alexandra Morgan Brown, Tyler Buchanan, Tanner Buchanan, Bishop G. Hayes; and many friends.

Services will be under the direction of Walker Funeral Home.
