Services for Jewell Carter Varner-Hunter, 90, will be at noon Saturday, Aug. 30, 2008, in Bethel Baptist Church. Interment will follow in Tatums Cemetery under the direction of Temple and Sons Funeral Directors, Inc.

Born April 12, 1918, in Tatums to Joseph and Janie Carter, she slipped the surly bonds of this life on Aug. 23, 2008, in Memphis, Tenn.

She was a teacher in the Tatums Public School system for 28 years. She retired as the director of the first Oklahoma Head Start Program, Big Five Counties (Bryan, Carter, Coal, Love and Pontotoc) after 17 years of stellar service.

Jewell and her late husband, Jimmy Lee; youngest daughter, Rose; and son-in-law, Jackson Payne, owned and operated Golden Acre Enterprises in Tatums. The entity included Varner’s General Merchandise, Service Station, Laundromat, Jewell’s Ceramics and Gift shop and office space for the Tatums Post Office.

She later remarried Dr. Norvell “Doc” Hunter and lived in Oklahoma City and Norman until his death in 2002.
