Memorial services for Neva Marie Goodwin will held on Thursday, November 12, 2009, at 2 p.m. at the Harvey-Douglas Centennial Chapel with Dr. Glen Pool, of Norman, officiating. Interment will follow at the Veterans Section of Rose Hill Cemetery, Ardmore, Oklahoma.
Marie was born May 25, 1921, in Winfield, Kansas, to the late Ella and Charles Hoyle. Marie died Wednesday evening, November 4, 2009, in the Madill, Oklahoma, nursing facility.
Marie married Carl H. Goodwin on June 19, 1954. After his death on March 10, 1980, she treasured the memories of their wonderful and eventful life together. She accompanied her husband to several overseas Office of the Air Attache’ appointments at American Embassies in Kabul, Afghanistan; Buenos Aires, Argentina; and Lima, Peru. In Kabul, she was employed as a secretary by the United States Information Services, American Embassy. Marie considered the years she lived in Afghanistan the most interesting of her life. However, coming to terms with the cultural differences between life in a third world country and a Christian country, took a lot of time and adjustments. She was privileged to travel in Europe and the Middle East before moving to South America. After being in so many countries, Marie realized how fortunate she was to have been born an American.
After graduating from Ardmore High School in 1940, Marie was employed by The Daily Ardmoreite, Jack Sullivan Insurance Agency, and Lois Ragland Interiors. While residing in Ardmore, she was a member of the Welcome Club, and for 14 years, a member of the Redbud Garden Club. As an avid animal lover, she donated several years as a volunteer for the Ardmore Animal Shelter. Marie enjoyed working in her yard and baking for her friends. Each month, she baked loaves of sourdough bread; her friends enjoyed dropping by to sample the goods while still warm from the oven.
Marie helped plan and worked on many of the 14 reunions held by her class and her participation was greatly appreciated. As class reporter and correspondent for many years, she not only furnished the local paper with write-ups of reunions, she mailed copies of the articles to interested classmates. She enjoyed the friendships that developed through the exchange of letters and telephone calls. She remained close to her loyal friends, Helen Segroves Flanagin of Oklahoma City, and Alwilda Payne Stephens of Fort Worth, Texas, whom also graduated in the AHS Class of 1940.
Marie was preceded in death by her good friends of many years — Lois Ragland, Rosabelle Skidmore and Margaret Brannon.

She is survived by her dear friend, Billie Nance Hensley, who got her a blind date with the man she married, and she was sincerely grateful to Billie and Valerie Shaw for their concern during her lengthy illness. Marie also appreciated so very much the care of her doctor, Dr. Pamela Ahearn, and also the staff of Integris Marshall County Medical Center, and the staff and residents of the Brookside Nursing Center.
