Longtime Ardmoreite, Harold Gene Morris, 84, died Wednesday, January 25, 2012, at his rural Ardmore residence. Born October 29, 1927, to the late Gilbert M. and Velma M. (Massey) Morris, at Legate, Oklahoma, he had lived in this community all of his life.
A graduate of Ardmore High School, the Class of 1945, Harold enlisted in the U. S. Navy during World War II, serving as a Seaman First Class aboard the USS Alabama. He was honorably discharged in 1946, and was awarded the Victory Medal.
After returning from military service, he and Laverne Shipman were married June 1, 1947, at Ardmore. She preceded him in death May 19, 2009.
Of Baptist faith, Harold was baptized as a young man at the Emmanuel Baptist Church; until a few years ago he was an active member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4574. He dearly loved his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, watching them participate in school sports and activities was very important; Harold also enjoyed fishing, camping at Lake Texhoma and teaching the ‘kids’ how to water ski. The owner of Harold Morris Electric, Harold was a well respected electrician and operated his company for over 50 years.
Survivors include twin daughters, Danna Kay Hitt and husband, Kenneth; Donna Rae Beard and Mike Vanway; grandchildren, Jamie Vernon, Kevin Hitt, Michael Beard and wife, Joni; great-grandchildren, Rebeccah Vernon, Tanner Vernon, Kase Hitt, Ridley Beard and Liam Beard.
A son, Harold Lynn Morris; wife, Laverne; and parents predeceased him.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, January 30, 2012, in the Centennial Chapel of Harvey-Douglas Funeral Home and Crematory, conducted by Dr. Alton Fannin. Burial will be in the Lakeview Cemetery, Marietta.
Serving as bearers will be Larry and Gary Scott, Kenneth and Robert Hitt, Donald Callaway and Glen Jones. Honorary bearers include members of the Dickson and Lone Grove Senior Citizens Centers and the McDonald’s morning coffee group.
