Services for Lila Esther Sturdevant, 98, will be at 2 p.m., Saturday, June 21, 2008, at the Harvey-Douglas Centennial Chapel with the Rev. Rick Baggett officiating.


Born May 8, 1910, in Ardmore to Joe W. and Harriett Ann Yates of McFarlane, she died June 19, 2008, in a local nursing facility.


She married Gordon Arthur Sturdevant of Marietta on June 21, 1930.


She was preceded in death by her husband, Gordon; three brothers, Joseph, Carno and Warren; and a great nephew, Private Chez Washalanta, USMC.


She and Gordon never had children of their own but helped raise three generations of nieces and nephews, except for Emmett’s son, Patrick Loughridge.


She graduated from Ardmore High School in 1928, attended Southwestern Junior College, Union College and received her bachelor’s degree in education from Southeastern College in Durant and a master’s degree from the University of Oklahoma. She taught school at Springer, Dickson and in Ardmore for 31 years, with most of those being at Franklin Elementary. She was classroom president for two years and treasurer for four years.


She was very active in the Oklahoma State Education Association, National Education Association and the First Presbyterian Church, where she taught the preschool class.


Survivors include cousins, Marjorie Stowe and her husband, Donald, John Yates and his wife, Ivonette, and great nieces and nephews, Margaret Chastain, Carol Caldwell, Emmett Loughridge Jr., Kesha Pierce and Ben Loughridge; and numerous great-great-nieces and -nephews.


Bearers will be Don Stowe, Mike Hisey, Dr. Brook Edmonds, Dr. Joe Hamill, Steve Douglas and Brian Douglas.
