“Operation Christmas Child — A Shoebox Gift,” collection week starts Monday.
The area relay center for the project is First Christian Church, 515 Maxwell Ave. N.W. Local organizers said shoebox gift donations will be accepted at the church from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. through Nov. 22.
“Operation Christmas Child — A Shoebox Gift” is a way to reach out to children around the world and in America who are suffering from natural disaster, war, terrorism, disease, poverty and famine. The project is the largest outreach program for children, sponsored by Samaritan’s Purse.
Since 1993, Operation Christmas Child has collected and hand delivered more than 54 million shoebox gifts to children in need in an estimated 120 countries and every year, the need grows.
Area residents are urged to participate by filling shoeboxes with small gifts, including school supplies, toys and personal items. Organizers said the impact of the shoebox gifts includes endless joy and the gift of hope to children who feel forgotten and believe hope is only a dream.
Those wanting to discuss the details of the project or need ideas for items to put in a shoebox gift should call First Christian Church at (580) 223-8462. If no one answers, leave a message and the call will be returned.
