Both teams are ranked in Class 3A.

SULPHUR — The clock ticking toward zeroes, Dan Baker finished his match in a manner that Sulphur coach Drew Swartz wants to see.

With about 23 seconds remaining in the third period, Baker utilized a takedown to score to go-ahead points. Surrendering one, he earned a 3-2 win to earn a decision, scoring three points for the Bulldogs.

Returning from an ankle injury, Korby Garcia followed, pinning his Comanche opponent.

Sulphur scored the final nine points.

The Class 3A No. 5 Indians enjoyed an experience advantage, building a substantial lead en route to a 60-15 dual win on Monday at Sulphur High School.

“Just to keep the match under control, don’t give anything big up,” Baker said, answering a question about what thoughts he had on his mind after taking the lead. “Keep a cool head. Don’t do anything too crazy.”

Said Swartz, "Dan had a good match. That kid (Konner Doucet) is a tough freshman. He's a big ol' freshman. That's all he does is wrestle. He just won junior-high state on Saturday."

Sulphur is the No. 15 team in Class 3A. Swartz acknowledged Comanche’s advantage in terms of experience.

“We’re going to battle regardless,” Swartz said. “That’s what I want to see. If I can get a guy to go three periods and keep fighting and battling, who knows what’ll happen?

“It’s the rolling over that you can’t deal with.”

In the locker room, Baker said Swartz “was impressed with the attitude we had, the energy we had. ... We knew we just had to do what we could do because we’re a young team.”

To wit, Garcia and Colton Pierce are the team’s lone seniors.

On Senior Night, Garcia concluded his career at home on an authoritative note.

“I was happy because I haven’t wrestled in a while,” Garcia said. “It made me feel good, feel ready for regionals,” which are two weeks away.

Swartz said Garcia sustained an ankle injury as he warmed up for the Midwestern Conference meet on Jan. 28 in Shawnee. "He couldn't walk on it for a week," Swartz said. "We've got to get him going again. He was moving well."

"The score doesn't look good, but overall, I was pleased with the way we wrestled," Swartz said. "I want 14 guys that'll go out there and fight you. They're all doing that."

Comanche will participate at the dual-state meet this weekend.

Swartz said there are aspects where Sulphur can improve.

For instance, Garcia acknowledged that the team members have to get in better shape.

Scrambles, Garcia said, are a weakness.

Sulphur got on the scoreboard in the third match of the dual, when John Miller pinned his foe to cut the Indians’ lead to 16-6.

Comanche scored the next 38 points.

Sophomore Trey Kiser had the best chance to snap that streak.

Comanche led 54-6 when Kiser took the mat opposite Comanche’s Chaz Allen. Kiser scored a reversal, allowing him to tie the score at 2 at the 1:01 mark of first period

At the 1:01 mark of the second period, Kiser’s near fall allows Sulphur to tie the score at 4.

With 43 seconds remaining in third period, Kiser scored a takedown to tie the match at 7. Allen scored the next 3 points to win via decision.

"That's one that we've got to close the gap," Swartz said. "We've got two weeks to close it because he (Allen) may be a guy we have to beat to qualify for state."

Swartz lauded Colton Pierce's performance.

John Miller, a state qualifier as a freshman, "is kind of starting to turn it back on. He had a rough start to the season, but he's kind of getting things going. Hopefully it's not too late."

Sulphur now has two weeks to prepare for regionals — where they will see Comanche.

The Bulldogs, though, are a young team. Swartz is coaching three freshmen, five sophomores and three juniors.

"We're young," he said. "They've just got to keep battling. If you can go a full three periods, anything can happen.

"They're (Comanche) pretty solid throughout. Their kids fight hard, too.

"We want to peak right here at the end. We're not where we need to be, but that's expected. We've got two weeks to get there."
