Ardmore went toe-to-toe with Class 5A, No. 3 Carl Albert on Friday, but the Titans finally wore the Tigers down 23-20.
With five minutes left in the third quarter, Ardmore (1-1, No. 8 in Class 5A) led 13-9.

But Carl Albert put together two long drives in the second half and converted fourth downs on each one to pull away.

Ardmore coach Doug Wendell said he didn’t count moral victories, but he was very happy with the effort the Tigers produced.

“I asked you to do two things,” he told the huddled team after the game. “I asked you to fight and to come together. You did that and I am proud of all of you.”

Ardmore’s defense was strong through most of the game, but was worn down a little in the second half as Carl Albert established the run and kept the ball most of the game. The Titans (2-0) ran for 198 yards, most of which came in the second half.

Wendell said he felt the Tigers came together as a team and improved a lot during this game.

“I knew our defense would play well. Our offense has a little ways to go, but it will get better,” Wendel said. “Tonight our defense was out there a little too long.”

Both teams struggled with moving the ball, and Carl Albert lost four fumbles and had an interception. The Titans fumbled on their first offensive play, and Ardmore recovered, giving the Tigers the ball at the Carl Albert 31. Ardmore was unable to move the ball.

Late in the first quarter, Carl Albert punted and downed the ball at the Ardmore 1. Ardmore’s Kenyon Gordon was tackled in the end zone on the next play for a safety.

Carl Albert scored again in the quarter when quarterback Darrian Winston made a fake to the fullback. While everyone was tackling the runner, Winston sprinted down the right sideline for a touchdown.

Ardmore got on the board late in the half when Travis Galbreath connected with Tyler Dickson on a 30-yard pass over the middle. The Tigers scored again on their first possession in the second half, a three yard run by Gordon.

Carl Albert put together two long drives late in the third and early in the fourth, both capped by short touchdown runs of 6 and 2 yards by Taylor Hawkins.

With about three minutes left in the game, Ardmore trailed 23-13. Galbreath directed the team down the field with his passing, connecting with Carter Swanson with 13 seconds left for an 8-yard touchdown. Ben Gonzalez’s extra point made it 23-20.

Ardmore went for the onside kick, but Carl Albert grabbed it and ran the clock out.

Josiah Reed led Ardmore’s receivers with five catches for 49 yards, and Galbreath passed for 127 yards, two touchdowns and one interception.

Galbreath thought the team grew a lot during the game. Even though the Tigers lost, he felt that they played well enough to have confidence in the future.

“We felt like we could win. I felt like we could win tonight,” he said.
