There was no school in session, but pen was put to paper on National Signing Day.

And schools throughout the state were rewarded with the best south-central Oklahoma had to offer in terms of football talent.

In Madill, Spencer Bond and Isaac Green made their college decisions official, signing with East Central and Southern Nazarene, respectively.
Bond and Green follow Madill’s stellar class of 2010. Last year, Darryl Fields (Southern Methodist), Kevin Roberts, Brad Avery (both Southwestern Oklahoma State) and Derek Martinez (Central Oklahoma) all signed football scholarships.

The Wildcats’ class of 2011 is smaller, but makes up for it with quality. An All-Ardmoreite Super Team selection, Green was the lone player from south-central Oklahoma selected to the Oklahoma Coaches Association All-State game. The District 3A-2 co-linebacker of the year registered 88 tackles, a sack and an interception in nine games. Green missed the final two games of Madill’s season with a leg fracture.

“I’m tickled to death for Isaac,” former Madill coach Kerry Roberts said. “He lives in the weight room and he’s wearing a blue and gold jacket for All-State for a reason, because of his work ethic.”

Along with Green, Bond was one of the central figures in the resurgence of Madill football the past four seasons. A four-time All-Ardmoreite Super Team selection at quarterback, Bond passed for 836 yards and 12 touchdowns and rushed for 1,118 yards and 12 TDs in 2010, winning District 3A-2 MVP honors. The 6-foot-1, 195-pounder finished his Madill career with more than 3,900 passing yards and 2,300 yards rushing.

Bond also had 31 tackles and five interceptions as a safety in his senior season. He’ll make the transition to defense full-time at East Central.

“I thought he was one of the better safeties around,” Roberts said. “He’s been a part of a program that made a name for itself the last four years along with a lot of other young men that paid the price.”

Bond said he came to his decision on Monday, picking ECU over Southeastern Oklahoma State and Central Oklahoma. He faxed his letter of intent to East Central Wednesday morning.

“They started recruiting me as a quarterback, then eventually I decided I wanted to play straight defense and that’s it,” said Bond, who will also try out as a punter at ECU. “It was the best school I found for what they offered me. I like the campus a lot and the people there made me feel welcome.”

AHS’s Douglas not revealing choice ... yet
He knows his destination, but is keeping it under wraps.

Ardmore defensive back Levonté Douglas faxed in his letter of intent on Wednesday, but is waiting until his signing ceremony at Ardmore High School before revealing his college choice. He said he reached his decision on Sunday, with only a few people knowing what school he selected.

“I did have a hard time, but I feel more comfortable at this one place,” he said Wednesday. “They made me feel at home more.”

“Like coach (Larry) McBroom said. ‘Wherever you feel is best in your heart, that’s where you want to go.’”

Douglas said the school he signed with offered him the opportunity to play offense as well. Douglas also logged time as a receiver and running back for the Tigers.

Douglas finished his senior season with three interceptions and was a District 5A-2 selection and All-Ardmoreite Super Team defensive back. He also won the team’s Tom Downing Award for Most Inspirational Athlete, in leading Ardmore to the Class 5A state playoffs.

“I did accomplish a lot of things, with the help of my coaches. As a whole, they taught me how to be a player, a team leader,” Douglas said. “Also, they taught me that football is more than a game. It teaches you life lessons.

“Not that many people have the opportunity to receive a scholarship. I consider it a blessing.”

NOTES: Plainview lineman Tyler Winnard will sign his letter of intent to Northeastern Oklahoma A&M at a date to be announced. According to his father, Gerald, NEO coaches were not able to be reached on Wednesday. Inclement weather has pushed back signing ceremonies across the state.
