Many are All Stars, but only Madill’s Isaac Green is All-State.

Last week, the senior linebacker was selected to play in the 2011 Southwest Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Oklahoma Coaches Association All-State game. Green led Madill with 88 tackles and added a sack and an interception en route to 3A-2 co-linebacker of the year honors.

Madill coach Kerry Roberts, who stepped down as Wildcats coach following his team’s 8-3 season and berth into the 3A state playoffs, ended his coaching career at Madill with an All-State player in each of his four seasons. Roberts started as an assistant in 2007 and took over head coaching duties the next season.

“If there was ever a kid that deserved it, it was him,” Roberts said Saturday. “He did everything we asked. Before his sophomore year, he wasn’t gonna even play, but three years later look what he’s accomplished.”

Green will play linebacker for the East team. He’s also the Wildcats’ lead blocker at fullback. This year, he paved the way for 1,300-yard rusher Caleb Muncrief and last year blocked for 2009 All-Ardmoreite Offensive Player of the Year Darryl Fields. Green (6-foot, 210 pounds) suffered a leg break in the second quarter of the Wildcats’ week 9 game against Plainview, but played through Madill’s 27-24 double overtime loss. With Green out injured, Madill lost its next two games to Pauls Valley in week 10 and to Tuttle in the 3A first round.

Green’s selection makes it four consecutive years that a Madill player has played in the All-State game. Wide receiver Kevin Roberts and linebacker Brad Avery played in the 2010 game as alternates (Fields was selected but did not play) and defensive lineman Junior Trevino was a 2009 pick. Linebacker Britt Moore was chosen as an alternate in 2008.

No south-central Oklahoma school has had more players in the game in that span.

“I’m really proud of that,” Roberts said. “(Isaac) is as good a football player as any kid I’ve coached.”

The All-State games will be played at a to be announced site on July 29 at 8 p.m.

NOTE: The players listed in Tuesday’s article were the OCA’s All-Star team selections based on classification. Those players represent the top seniors selected by coaches in their respective classifications, but will not participate in the All-State game in June.
