Chants of “No. 1, No. 1” and “We’re going to Hooters” spread through the sixth-grade Plainview football team Saturday at Indian Stadium.
At least one of those was correct, but who was to tell the unbeaten Indians otherwise? They are Super Bowl champions.
The sixth graders completed an 8-0 season with a 14-0 win over Davis in the Arbuckle Pee Wee League Super Bowl. Tyler Owens and Clay Atwood scored the touchdowns and Atwood added a two-point conversion to complete the Plainview scoring.
Davis drove into Indian territory late in the game, but an interception from Cole Tucker preserved the shutout and the championship.
Plainview’s defense allowed four touchdowns all season.
“This is what a lot of hard work and teamwork does for you,” coach Rocky Atencio said. “We have guys that weigh 66 pounds and guys that weigh 108 and they’re all important to us.”
“As a dad, it’s awesome,” assistant coach Jeremy Atwood, father of Clay, said. “They’ve all done a good job.”
Davis completed its season 5-2.
Fifth grade
Plainview 26 Dickson 0
The fifth-grade Indians were the first area team to go undefeated on the day, finishing 8-0 for the second consecutive year with a shutout of Dickson.
Parker Foster scored two touchdowns and Kobe Brewster and Robbie Wilson added scores for the fifth graders in their first Arbuckle Pee Wee Super Bowl win. Last season the Super Bowl was not played.
“I’m real proud of ’em; we got a great bunch of kids,” coach Mark Brewster said.
Dickson finished its season 5-3. The loss was the second of the season to Plainview — the first one a 26-12 result.
“The boys started out 3-0 and killing people,” Dickson coach Buddy Mitchell said. “We came out playing hard today and let a couple of big plays beat us, but we played hard on defense all day.”
Fourth grade
Atoka 28 Plainview 26, OT
The Atoka Wampus Cats handed Plainview its first loss of the fourth-grade season in an overtime thriller at Indians Stadium.
With the score knotted at 20 after regulation, Atoka’s TD and two-point conversion were the difference in OT.
Spencer Sommerville led the way for Plainview with three touchdowns and Tyler Yakubchik scored on a first-quarter fumble recovery to pace the Indians’ defense.
The Indians finished the season 6-1. Plainview beat Atoka 8-6 in the first meeting of the teams, but the Wampus Cats had new personnel this time around.
“I’m proud of the kids for carrying out the game plan and executing,” coach Greg Sommerville said. “Atoka had a couple of different kids at quarterback and running back, but we can’t take anything away from them.”
