It’s a great day for players and coaches in south-central Oklahoma.
Especially at Ardmore and Plainview, where a combined 11 athletes will sign National Letters of Intent today. The Tigers lead the way with seven signees — six in football and one in track — and Plainview will send four to college for football, including one to a Division I-Football Championship Subdivision program.
Ardmore running back Ashdon Perry, offensive lineman Trevon Lawson and defensive back Josiah Reed are each expected to sign with Division II Northeastern State University (Tahlequah). Also signing from Ardmore are linebacker Brian Carr and receiver Juaren McGee, who are each headed to Bacone College (Muskogee); linebacker Tyler Dickson, who decided on Northwestern Oklahoma State (Alva) late Tuesday; and Jywayne Allen, who will sign a track scholarship with Oklahoma Baptist University (Shawnee) after fielding offers from the University of Oklahoma, among others.
From stops at schools in Oklahoma and Texas, Ardmore coach/athletic director Douglas Wendel said he’s never had as many signings in one year from one team.
“We’ve worked at it to try and get their name out there and we’ve had some positive results,” Wendel said. “We still have several others with options to go somewhere in the next 6-8 weeks. I give them the credit of being good ball players.”
Plainview will send three players to NAIA schools and one to Division I-FCS. Running back/quarterback Blake Campo will sign with Southern Nazarene University (Bethany), linebacker Gary Heller is heading to William Penn University (Oskaloosa, Iowa) and offensive lineman/linebacker Christian Edmonds will go to Oklahoma Baptist, which is restarting its football program in 2013 after a 73-year-hiatus.
Offensive lineman Josh Huckleberry is expected to sign with the University of San Diego, which plays in Division I-FCS’s Pioneer Football League.
“These young men got themselves to this point,” Berus said. “You do take some gratification that you have kids going to play at the next level, but they put in the effort needed to give themselves a chance at this opportunity.”
Southwestern Oklahoma State in Weatherford is expected to sign two area players in Ringling running back Matthew Farris and Lone Grove offensive lineman Greg Higgs. Davis will have two signees in quarterback/safety Cole Weber and linebacker Zac Maynard.
Weber will sign with East Central University while Maynard is set for Northeastern Oklahoma A&M (Miami).
