Thackerville has dropped two football games in a row. And that’s not something Wildcat fans have had to deal with in some time.
But not to worry. Last week’s 34-18 loss to Caddo was a non-district contest. The Wildcats remain 5-1 in District C-2 and 5-3 overall. Their lone district misstep was a 50-30 loss to Temple on Oct. 15.
While Thackerville will have two key players out of action tonight due to injuries, head coach Cody McCage explains they have been working hard this week to fill in all the vacant holes before the Victory Life Eagles arrive for a key district game.
“We’re having to move people around this week because of our injury issues,” McCage said. “We lost (quarterback) Jonathon Buckaloo last week, and we also lost (wide receiver) Stephen Mose. This week, Michael Goff will take on quarterbacking duties, and he should be fine. Although this will be his first game to start, he played the latter portion of last week’s game and has some experience. When Jonathon went down, we were ahead 12-0. After that it didn’t go well.”
Victory Life enters tonight’s game at 3-4, 3-3 in district play.
“We know they like to throw the football,” McCage said. “They have a good quarterback and good receivers, so we’ll need to be ready for that.
“They’re playing pretty good right now, but we’re hopeful we’ve made the right adjustments and personnel moves to give ourselves the best chance to win. We need to win one of our last two regular-season games to be in good shape. We don’t want to slip to fourth and have to travel to Shattuck for an opening-round playoff game.
Losses to injury and losses in the record books haven’t kept Thackerville from going forward.
“We understood what we were up against going into the two games we recently lost. Both Temple and Caddo are pretty good teams. We have to forget all about those games and look to the future. “Although we’re a little banged up, I’m hoping everyone will pull together and we’ll be all right. We just need to get back to playing good fundamental football. And we’re hopeful Jonathon and Stephen can make it back in time for the playoffs.”
