Tory Dwyer put the Dickson Comets on her back as she finished with a game-high 30 points and scored 23 of Dickson’s 28 second-half points in a 46-43 come-from-behind Lake Country Conference win over Lone Grove Friday night.
Dwyer hit 7-of-17 from the floor, including four 3-point baskets, and knocked down 12-of-16 from the line. The junior guard pulled down eight rebounds, two steals and three assists.
“Tory definitely had a great night for us,” Dickson coach Ron Dwyer said. “But it was a team effort in that the rest of the girls picked up on who had the hot hand. And they managed to run our offense in such a way that Tory got the ball at key times. We maintained our poise after they got a big lead on us.”
The Longhorns inbounded the ball with 3 seconds left to Brianna Johnson, whose 3-point attempt was blocked by Dwyer as the buzzer sounded.
The Comets (10-8, 4-1 LCC) took a 10-9 lead after the first period, but the next two frames belonged to the Longhorns. A strong inside presence by Erin Sprouse and Johnson started to give Lone Grove (4-12, 2-3) the upper hand. A 9-1 run early in the second was keyed by three lob passes to Sprouse for easy layups.
Katelyn Moon came of the bench to spark the Longhorns later in the half. She knocked down a trey, pulled down a defensive rebound and hit Sprouse with a pin-point pass for an easy bucket that had Lone Grove on top 22-18 at the break.
The final 8 minutes belonged to Dwyer and the Comets. She nailed three treys, a 15-foot jumper and was 7-of-9 from the line in the fourth. Dickson outscored Lone Grove 20-7 in the fourth.
“Free throws were the big difference in this game,” Lone Grove coach Mike Phillips said. “Dickson did what it took to get to the line, and we didn’t. Tory had a super game for them, and we couldn’t stop her down the stretch.”
The Comets were 16-of-27 from the line to just 3-of-4 for the Longhorns.
Sprouse led Lone Grove with 12 points, and Kim Jones chipped in 10.
