The first events of the Oklahoma Coaches Association All-State games kicked off Monday, with area golfers and baseball players in competition.
The All-State golfers went head-to-head in match-play format at Mohawk Park Golf Course. Kingston’s Justin Brown lost his match to Casey Todd of Norman North by two strokes, as Brown shot a 73 to Todd’s 71. Tyler Russell of Elk City shot a low of 66 for the boys, joined by Whitney McAteer of Jenks (72) for the girls.
Lone Grove’s Kelsey Anderson shot an 84 to lose by one stroke to Jordan Langston of Kansas, but her West team prevailed over the East 301/2-231/2 in points. Brown’s East squad outscored the West 30-24.
In baseball, Davis outfielder Blake Looney went 1-for-1 with a run scored in a rain-shortened contest, but his Small West team lost 8-4 in five innings. Looney entered the game in the third inning and advanced to second on a high throw from third base to first. Looney was singled in by the next man up.
The large schools game had four area players in Ardmore’s Brayden Brumley and Josiah Custar, Sulphur’s Colton McKenzie and Lone Grove’s Derek Towler, all playing for the Large West team. The Large East, however, won 15-6 in five innings.
Brumley was 1-for-3 and Custar was 1-or-2, each with RBI singles, McKenzie was 0-for-1 with a walk and Towler conceded one earned run and three unearned on the mound.
