The Ardmore Tigers tennis team hopes for a strong finish to the season this weekend. The Tigers conclude the 2008 campaign in the Class 4A state tournament at the Oklahoma City Tennis Center. Matches will begin today and Saturday at 9:30 a.m.
“We feel good about our chances at state,” Ardmore coach Becky Dickinson said. “I thought we played really well at regionals. We’ve got a good team, but this year there’s a lot of good teams. Our regional was one of the toughest in all the state with us, Shawnee, McAlester and Durant. Shawnee’s doubles teams are outstanding. Tulsa Bishop Kelley as a team is good, and they’ll be a team to have to contend with. We just have to come out and play, and I know our boys can. They’re playing the best tennis we’ve played all year. Our doubles teams played outstanding at regionals, and our singles players did also. I think our team is peaking at the right moment.”
Tim Argo, who won state with Luke Jordan at No. 1 doubles last season, will be at No. 1 singles this weekend.
“He’s a returning state champion at No. 1 doubles,” Dickinson said. “He’s had a outstanding season in singles. He’s one of the top players in the state.”
Luke Glazener will be at No. 2 singles.
“He’s played both singles and doubles all year,” Dickinson said. “He’s got the ability to win a lot of matches.”
Cody Keeton and Franco Guadarrama will be at No. 1 doubles.
“This is their third trip to state as a doubles team,” Dickinson said. “They’re athletic and experienced. They know how to win.”
Elliott Thompson and Patrick McSweeney will be at No. 2 doubles.
“They’re sophomores, and are an excellent team,” Dickinson said. “They have talent and determination to do well at state.”
