Edmond, OK —

Madill junior Spencer Bond got another shot to top Bethany’s Silas Day and Purcell’s Cole Swayze.

He made the most of it, topping his District 3A-2 rivals — and a few more bigger-school contestants — in the Top Gun Challenge on Saturday at Edmond Memorial.

“It’s a big stepping stone for me,” Bond said. “For the program, it just adds another dimension to what we can do.”

Bond was one of 15 quarterbacks invited to the Challenge. A total of 20 competed; five more entered through a qualifying contest. Other contestants included Matt Oberste of Sallisaw, J.T. Realmuto of Carl Albert and Tulsa Union’s Chase Boyce.

Bond won the mobile target contest, the event in which a big bull’s-eye moves across the field and quarterbacks try to hit the target, and was second in the deep ball throw, his 58-yarder one shy of overall runner-up Danny Rossi of Edmond North.

Swayze, who was third overall, won the mobility contest and was third in the mobile target.

“It doesn’t surprise me,” Madill coach Kerry Roberts said of Bond’s win. “I’ve seen what he can do as a freshman and a sophomore. He’s probably the best I’ve seen in 30 years … that I coached.”

Roberts cited Bond’s efficiency this past season. The All-Ardmoreite quarterback completed 121-of-184 passes for 1,830 yards and 20 touchdowns, and rushed 125 times for 798 yards and 14 scores last year. He threw only three interceptions.

“For him to go up against the so-called big boys is a testament to his ability,” Roberts said.
