The Plainview Indians put 11 players in the scoring column and played everyone suited up as they rolled to a 65-38 victory over the Marietta Indians Tuesday night at the Plainview Activity Center.
Class 3A No. 8 Plainview (16-2, 4-0 Lake Country Conference) was led by Gary Inglett’s 15 points and nine rebounds, with Michael Fagan scoring 12 points.
Plainview started a bit slow but made up for it in the closing seconds of the first half, and then pulled away with a strong second half. Despite a tough Plainview man-to-man defense the opening period remained close. Marietta (4-12) committed eight turnovers, but Dustin Brokeshoulder hit a layup buzzer-beater to pull Marietta within 17-11 heading to the second period.
“I thought we came out with a lack of intensity,” Plainview coach Jeremy Stewart said. “And they kept the game close most of the first half. But in the second half our intensity and focus made for a better game on our part. We turned up the defensive pressure, and we got plenty of fast-break buckets, especially in the third.”
Stewart was pleased that everyone got in the game, and he was particularly pleased with the play of his starting point guard.
“Cody Greathouse did an excellent job (Tuesday) of running our offense when he was in the game,” Stewart said. “He had quite a number of assists, and he found the open man a number of times down the court. We actually out-scored them 33-14 in the second half, and that was more like we’re capable of playing.”
Marietta remained close throughout the second period. A 3-pointer by Justin Brown had the visiting Indians to within 28-24 with a minute left before intermission. Plainview scored the final four with Fagan hitting a running jumper at the buzzer.
“We played pretty well in the first half, but we didn’t use good judgment in our shot selection in the second half,” Marietta coach Duane Shaw said. “It was important that we be more deliberate with our offense, and we took ill-advised outside shots instead of being patient for better shots later in the possession.”
Plainview put the game away with a huge third period, going on a 10-0 run to take a 42-24 lead.
Austin McGill led Marietta with 10 points, and Kyle Hull added nine points.
