Burneyville, OK —

It’s tipoff time, and Springer and Turner had the honors of tipping off the season Tuesday.

The Springer boys rode double-digit scoring contributions from freshmen Quan Brown and Josh Smith to beat the Falcons 53-48. For the girls, Springer led until a 17-point fourth quarter by Turner pushed the Falcons to a 46-43 win.

Brown and Smith scored 15 and 13 points, respectively to lead Springer. Turner was led by Gary Clifton’s 21.

The Falcons were missing one of their top players, senior guard R.J. Peery, whom coach Steve Lee said will return on Friday at Mill Creek.

“We didn’t have a lot of depth tonight and that hurt us,” Lee said. “We got outhustled and outplayed, but we’ll go back and start all over with ’em.”

In the girls game, Springer held a 34-29 advantage after three quarters. But Turner seized the game on three Cardinal turnovers in the last two minutes.

“That really killed us,” Springer coach Robert Bradley said. “We started off really hot, and let it slip away from us tonight.”

Kanielle Wilson scored 21 points to pace the Cardinals, and Conner Harmon netted a game-high 24 for Turner.
