The Plainview Indians had a good performance at the Super Scrimmage on Thursday night at Noble Stadium as they knocked off Class 5A’s Durant, 7-6.

Quarterback Chad Smith looked good under center, while running back Blake Campo showed just how versatile he is.

“We cannot start this season soon enough. We’ve been working for this since we missed that field goal last November,” coach Chris Berus said.

Smith hit Campo with a 36-yard pass down the sideline late to secure the game.

“He (Campo, who played quarterback in Plainview’s first scrimmage) is very versatile. We spread him out and told him to run,” Berus said. “When you can take your running back from last season and play quarterback one week because you’re not sure what the eligibility status of your quarterback is going to be, that says a lot. He can also catch a pass out of the backfield. He’s a pretty good safety, too.”

Campo had some good runs, but it was a 63-yard gain by Brandon Nowell that set up Plainview’s lone touchdown of the night. Nowell capped the five-play, 72-yard drive with a 3-yard touchdown. Sam Waters added the PAT to make it 7-0, just before the second half.

Christian Edmond’s stuffed Durant quarterback Keaton Webb on third-and-7 on the Lions’ second drive to force consecutive three-and-outs.

Durant’s scoring drive came on their last series as they mixed together the run and pass. Plainview was called for pass interference, which resulted in 1st-and-goal at the four. The Lions scored one play later on a quarterback sneak, but the PAT was no good.

“I’m proud of this team. They don’t care who they are playing, they just want to go out and compete,” Berus said. “I think the one thing we’ve learned is we have a lot of depth. I think we might be able to win the battle of attrition.”

In the red zone series against Durant’s second team, the Indians scored three times in their first four plays. Out of 10 plays, the Indians scored four touchdowns.
Berus said he was also happy with last week’s effort against Millwood.

“The plays they scored on, they just made great catches. Our guys were in good position. That’s just the way it happens, you can have good coverage and still get burned. But as the game went on we started to wear them out. And that’s what we want. We want to play a smash-mouth style of football. Wear teams out up front and take control.”
