When 11 players run the ball on offense against your biggest rival, all is well in the world of Davis.
And the beat won’t stop for the Wolves after a 43-7 demolition of their longtime rival. Davis (8-0, 5-0 District 2A-4), the AP’s top-ranked team in 2A, travels to play winless Kingston tonight.
The game is hardly the pressure cooker of the Murray County War, but it’s not a vacation date, either.
“No, it’s too close to the playoffs,” Davis coach Jody Weber said. “When we get into a situation where we have back-to-back meaningful games, we treat it the same.”
Every game is meaningful now, even against the Redskins (0-8, 0-5), owners of a 19-game losing streak.
Tonight doesn’t look any more promising for the Redskins, who were shut out 59-0 last week at Plainview. Davis hasn’t allowed more than 14 points in a game all season.
Weber hinted at his defense approaching 2006 levels — the last time the Wolves went undefeated in the regular season.
“We’re probably right up there; statistically, we’re pretty good,” Weber said. “We have lots of kids playing solid. We really don’t have that kid we have to hide.”
Sulphur can certainly attest to that.
“It was good obviously for our confidence,” Weber said of beating Sulphur. “But the kids did a good job on Monday of getting over it.”
