Fresh off a 12-1 season, the Davis Wolves looked good on Thursday night as they faced Newcastle and Purcell in Newcastle.

The varsity offense scored two touchdowns, and for the second consecutive week kept its opponent out of the end zone.

“I think we improved. We played some pretty good teams in Newcastle and Purcell and we were able to keep them from scoring any points,” coach Jody Weber said. “I think we made the biggest improvement on the offensive line. And the defense looked a lot better, the guys were flying around out there.”

The season can’t start soon enough for the Wolves, who open up play on Friday night when they renew their with Ringling.

“More than anything, they are ready to get into the routine again of focusing on an opponent. The first three weeks you really don’t do that,” Weber said.

Ringling shines against Tishomingo
Ringling has been known for its rushing attack for quite sometime, but for once coach Tracy Gandy thinks his squad’s passing game is ahead of the running game.

“Tyler Shores was very sharp against Tishomingo. He completed all of his passes, receivers ran good routes. Our offensive line is great in pass protection, very big, very athletic,” Gandy said. “But I think it’s par for the course, when you’re breaking in new running backs it’s going to take some time for them to see everything. By the time this thing is over, we’re going to have a very good backfield.”

Shores was 4-for-4 through the air, while Gandy did say his running game improved from the first week, as they were seeing and hitting the creases.

Defensively, Gandy said his team “absolutely suffocated Tishomingo.”

“We’ve got some things to correct, we just need to be more consistent. Starting off with Davis, we need to get real good, real fast. We’ve never gone up against a team as fast as Davis. You make one mistake, they hit the crease and score. Normally you get a few weeks to prepare for really good teams, but we’re starting off with a great team,” the coach said. “There is a reason they’ve won more games than anyone in southern Oklahoma the last 40 years. They’ve got great athletes, but the coaching is even better.”
