Call it the “Red-A Rivalry” or the “Battle of the Cats.” Ardmore won it on Friday.
The Tigers forced three turnovers and Andra Brown rushed for 214 yards in a 28-7 win over rival Ada. The 87th all-time meeting between the teams made former Ada coach Larry McBroom 2-1 against his former school since taking over at Ardmore.
Ardmore scored the first 21 points of the game until Ada closed to within 14 on a Wyatt Robson QB sneak with 26 seconds to go in the third. The Cougars were knocking on the door at Ardmore’s 23-yard line in the fourth quarter, but a delay of game penalty changed a would-be first down on fourth-and-2 to fourth-and-7. Ada turned the ball over on downs and Ardmore drove 72 yards for a Kenyon Gordon 10-yard TD in the closing seconds.
Ardmore quarterback Trey Cohee threw touchdown passes of 16 and 3 yards to Josiah Reed and Tray Fish, respectively, and Brown added a 22-yard TD run. Ada’s Nathan Blakely led the Cougars with 89 yards on 19 carries.
Defensively, Reed and Levonte Douglas each intercepted passes and Gordon recovered a fumble on Ada’s first offensive drive. Ardmore defensive end Carson McPherson went down with a left knee injury in the second quarter and did not return.
Aubrey (Texas) 36, Plainview 7
AUBREY, Texas — Trailing 8-7 at halftime, Plainview (0-1) was shut out by Aubrey in the second half.
Blake Campo scored the Indians’ lone touchdown on a rushing TD in the first quarter. The extra point put the Indians up 7-0 and a strong defensive effort held Aubrey to few yards in the first half.
The Chapparals went ahead just before halftime, however, and a two-point conversion provided the game-winning points. Aubrey tacked on 14 points in the third to pull away.
Dickson 7, Kingston 6
DICKSON — James Byford’s 8-yard TD run in the third quarter and the ensuing Matt Milhollen PAT kick was enough to push Dickson past Kingston on Friday.
Jared Hayes put Kingston up 6-0 in the third on a 2-yard QB sneak, but a failed two-point conversion proved costly.
The Redskins (0-1) outrushed the Comets (1-0) 218-34.
Marlow 27, Lone Grove 0
MARLOW — A scoreless game at halftime turned into a shutout win for Marlow over Lone Grove.
The Longhorns turned the ball over at midfield in the third quarter, allowing Marlow to take momentum. Lone Grove (0-1) missed a field goal on its first possession and blocked a punt in the first half, but couldn’t score deep in Marlow territory, as the Outlaws’ defense tightened up from 20 yards in.
