The Davis Wolves are moving on to the 2A quarterfinals, and No. 2 Lincoln Christian awaits.
Chris Campbell closed the door on John Marshall with a 53-yard touchdown at 4:01 in the fourth quarter, and the Wolves’ offensive line and bevy of running backs wore down the visiting Bears for 249 rushing yards after halftime in a 20-13 win Friday at Wolf Field.
The Wolves (12-0) remained undefeated with power football (rushing TDs from Campbell, Logan Webb and Matt Burba) and a defense that held its 12th consecutive opponent to less than 14 points. Junior defensive back Justin Douglas picked off two passes to pace a Wolves’ defense that allowed only 204 yards of total offense.
John Marshall (9-3) momentarily tied the score at 7-7 on a 84-yard run from Miles Jackson in the third quarter, but Webb scored from 2 yards out and Campbell's long TD sealed the Wolves' quarterfinal berth. The Bears added a 10-yard passing touchdown as time expired.
Campbell led Davis with 118 yards on 16 carries. The win was the 100th in Jody Weber’s nine-year tenure at Davis, improving his record to 100-19.
Next week’s quarterfinal game at Davis will showcase the top two teams in Class 2A. Davis and Lincoln Christian finished the regular season ranked No. 1 and No. 2, respectively, by the Associated Press. Lincoln Christian beat Beggs 30-0 on Friday.
Class A second round
Watonga 24, Ringling 14
RINGLING — More early-round disappointment for Ringling.
The second-ranked Blue Devils will be home for the third round of the Class A playoffs for the sixth straight season after ninth-ranked Watonga looked like a team better than its ranking, beating Ringling 24-14 Friday night.
A defensive battle in the first half turned into a game of “catch me if you can.” Watonga quarterback Trevon Hartsfield rushed for 79 of his 93 yards in the second half and scored three touchdowns, two of them by passes.
Ringling sophomore Matthew Farris rushed 11 times for 97 yards, all in the second half. Senior Skylar Bartlett played only the first half on offense with a high right-ankle sprain and had 12 yards on five carries. He punted twice in the second half.
The Ringling senior class finished 31-3 — not counting its freshman season — but each loss came in the postseason. The seniors garnered 29 of Ringling’s 30 straight regular-season games during the span.
Watonga (10-2) will play No. 1 Tonkawa next weekend.
