Four days of competition produced a slew of national-title contenders for Plainview Track Club at the AAU Junior Olympic National Qualifying meet, July 2-5.
Several athletes posted personal bests en route to national qualification. PTC had seven boys and 15 girls qualify.
For the boys, Casey Keys (1,500-meter run), Colby Thompson (steeple chase), Andrew Leahey (1,500, 3,000 and steeple chase), Chance Sweeten (shot put), Payton Sweeten (discus throw), Trey Goodson (shot put) and Tanner Callihan (pole vault) posted national qualifying marks.
On the girls’ side, Emily Sherry (1,500, 3,000 and 4x800 relay alternate), Makayla Miller (1,500 and 4x800), Katie Lackey (3,000 and 4x800), Mary Latimer (4x800), Spencer Jordan (800 and 4x800), Alex Davis (800, 1,500, 3,000 and 4x800), Kaitlin Moore (1,500 and 4x800), Rebekah Hickman (1,500, 3,000 and 4x800 alternate), Chelsi Norris (4x800) and Tess Lackey (1,500, 3,000 and steeple chase) qualified in track events.
Chloe Thompson (high jump and pole vault), Danielle Nowell (pole vault), Shannon Wilson (discus throw) and Jessi Vernon (javelin) were the field qualifiers.
PTC posted 25 personal- best times, with only one coming in an event win (youth girls 4x800 relay). The boys had Tanner Callihan win the intermediate pole vault with a vault of 13 feet. The girls had wins in the intermediate 1,500 and 3,000 runs by Alex Davis, the young women’s 1,500 and 3,000 runs by Tess Lackey and the aforementioned 4x800 (Miller, Lackey, Latimer and Woods).
The top four in each event qualified to go on to nationals. The 2009 AAU Junior Olympic Nationals will be in Des Moines, Iowa at Drake University, Aug. 2-8.
