The Dickson boys held Plainview to nine first-half points and then weathered the Indians’ second-half comeback to take a 52-46 victory Tuesday night in Lake Country Conference play.

The Comets improved to 15-3 overall and 4-1 in conference play. The Indians fell to 12-6 and 4-1.

Plainview struggled to find openings in Dickson’s stubborn defense in the first half. The Indians hit just 4 of their 23 shots from the floor and were 1 of 14 from beyond the arc.

“Dickson played great defense on us the first half, but we managed to get back in the game after halftime,” Plainview coach Jeremy Stewart said. “We didn’t shoot the ball well, especially from the outside, but we played solid defense in the second half, and I think that helped fuel our offense when we made a run to overtake them.”

Senior post Jacob Custer had a strong third period to help the Comets maintain their lead. Custer hit five buckets inside the paint, which ended up being 10 of Dickson’s 16 points in the period. The Indians started hitting their outside shots following intermission. Bobby Moore knocked down two from beyond the arc, and Kory Kennedy hit another.

Dickson’s Jacob Lindsey hit a three at the buzzer to put the Comets up 38-24 heading to the fourth. But that would be the final bucket for Dickson for more than 4 minutes.

Plainview continued to bomb away from the outside, and began finding range. In the final 8 minutes, Jerred Morrison hit three treys, and Kennedy connected again.

The Indians mounted an 11-0 run that pulled them within 38-35 before Custer hit a free throw to break Plainview’s run.

Custer had 15 points and nine rebounds to lead the Comets, and Lindsey finished with 13 points.

“We knew Plainview was competitive, and we understood at halftime this game was not over,” Dickson coach Chuck Ryan said. “This is a tough game every year because both teams are so competitive. Finishing a game like this is very important to our club right now.”

Morrison paced the Indians with 14 points. Moore had nine points, and Deric Shelton had eight points and 11 rebounds.
