All polling places in the state will open today for Republican voters to decide who will be the party’s nominee for state insurance commissioner.

Former Insurance Commissioner John Crawford and John Doak, a former insurance agent and executive from Tulsa, are in the statewide runoff election. The winner will face Democratic incumbent Kim Holland in the November general election.

The polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. for registered Republicans to cast their ballots. Carter County Election Board Secretary Helen McReynolds said there are 6,799 active Republican voters in the county.

Love County Democrats will elect either Bob Burkhart or incumbent James Wade as District 1 county commissioner. And Jefferson County Democrats will choose between John Dale or Ricky Martin for District 3 commissioner.

Registered voters of both parties who live in the Thackerville School District will consider a $5.395 million school bond issue. If passed, the bond will be used to build a new high school and gymnasium in order to alleviate overcrowding. School bond issues require a 60-percent “super majority” vote to pass.

Former four-term state Rep. Kevin Calvey faces political newcomer James Lankford for the GOP nod in the 5th District, a seat current Republican U.S. Rep. Mary Fallin is leaving to run for governor.

Two Republicans, Dr. Charles Thompson, a 47-year-old veterinarian, and Daniel Edmonds, a 26-year-old rancher and doctoral candidate, are vying to face Democrat Dan Boren in the Nov. 2 general election.

Boren is seeking a fourth term in Oklahoma’s 2nd District.

U.S. Congressman Tom Cole, a Republican who represents the 4th District, is not involved in a runoff race.
