Law enforcement officials are reluctant to release any additional information surrounding the stabbing of a Thackerville High School student Monday — the opening of the 2010-2011 school year.

Police Chief Brandon Stockard said an 18-year-old female student was stabbed in the neck by a 17-year-old male student on the school’s campus. The attack occurred shortly after classes were dismissed for the day.

Stockard said the victim was taken to a local hospital. She was reportedly released from the medical facility Tuesday.

The chief confirmed Tuesday the 17-year-old used what was described as a “kitchen knife,” in the attack. Stockard said the knife had been recovered.

However, the chief was unwilling to speculate on the possible motive for the attack, saying early Tuesday the parents of the suspect had refused to allow their son to give authorities a statement concerning the assault.

District Attorney Craig Ladd said the suspect is currently being held in a juvenile detention facility.
Ladd said his office had received all of the available investigative reports concerning the attack late Tuesday. Prosecutors will review the reports and the district attorney promised a “decision” would be reached on how the state will proceed by “the end of business today.”
