National Signing Day is Feb. 1, and Ardmore’s senior class is busy getting recruited.
Many of the players who contributed to the football team’s run to the state semifinals are in the middle of basketball season or preseason baseball or track. Others are in the weight room, keeping in shape in case that scholarship offer comes calling.
Some have their minds made up. Brian Carr and Juaren McGee each verbally committed to Bacone College for football last week after a recruiting visit. Running back Ashdon Peery and quarterback Travis Galbreath were also offered scholarships by Bacone but said they will wait until later in the school year to make their decisions.
In addition to football, Galbreath listed East Central, Central Oklahoma, Murray State and Cameron among others as schools interested in him in baseball.
Wide receiver/defensive back Josiah Reed and offensive lineman Trevon Lawson both went on a recuiting visit to Northeastern State (Tahlequah) on Saturday and were offered scholarships. At Tahlequah, Reed and Lawson were two of only three players at the recruiting weekend who were asked to stay overnight by the school’s coaching staff.
Reed and Lawson also visted Central Oklahoma in Edmond on Wednesday and were offered. The Division II Bronchos have an entirely new coaching staff entering their second season in the Division II Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association.
The Ardmore football program has roots throughout the Division II ranks. At UCO, 2011 Ardmore graduate Levonte Douglas is currently a defensive back for the Bronchos. At East Central in Ada, 2009 Ardmore graduates Reuben Tiller and Cody Nall are entering their third seasons as contributors to ECU’s resurgent football program.
Reed, who led Class 5A in interceptions with six, holds offers from ECU, UCO and Northeastern State. Lawson, Ardmore’s top offensive linemen from this past season, also has offers from from the same three schools. Along with UCO, Northeastern also plays in MIAA while East Central is a member of the Great American Conference.
MIAA school Missouri Southern State (Joplin, Mo.) has also visited Ardmore High School to talk with prospective players.
“I’m loving it and just enjoying my time visting,” Lawson said Monday of the recruiting process. “I’m just taking advantage of the opportunities that have come to me.”
Kenyon Gordon and Jywayne Allen, both safeties for the football team and state champs on Ardmore’s 4x400 relay team, are in preseason track. They have options of their own.
Gordon is considering Texas State for football, among others, while Allen, a three-time Class 5A state champion in both the 400-meter dash and 4x400 relay, has track offers from Oklahoma and Oklahoma Baptist. Allen was also contacted by Georgetown last week.
Sitting in the coaches’ offices on Monday, Reed and Ardmore defensive coordinator Josh Newby reflected on the recruiting process.
“I think it’s wonderful,” Newby said. “Any chance the kids get to get a college education is great.”
