A member of Ardmore High School’s band and color guard died early Tuesday morning in a two-vehicle crash on Mt. Washington Road.
Sgt. Jason Qualls, Ardmore Police Department Public Information Officer, said 17-year-old Alyssa Porter was pronounced dead at Mercy Memorial Health Center, where she was taken by ambulance shortly after the 7:30 a.m. crash in the 4200 block of Mt. Washington Road.
According to APD investigative reports, Porter was southbound when she ran off the road. She overcorrected, sending her 2000 Pontiac into a broad slide. The teenager’s car was struck a 1992 Buick, driven by Stephen Dennis, Ardmore. Qualls said Dennis was also taken by ambulance to MMHC for treatment of a non-life threatening head injury. Dennis who is principal at the local Seventh-day Adventist School was treated and later released from the medical facility.
Sabra Emde, public relations consultant for Ardmore City Schools, issued a statement Tuesday afternoon calling Porter a “beloved student” and saying the AHS senior died en route to school.
“We are deeply saddened by the loss of our student and extend our condolences to her family and friends,” Emde said. “Ardmore City Schools is coming together as a school family in response to this tragic event. Counselors from other Ardmore school sites, various Ardmore parent groups, along with the C/SARA Crisis Management Team, are available to provide support and counseling to our high school students, faculty and staff. Counseling will be available as long as needed.”
