The Carter County Health Department said Thursday that children under 10 who have been vaccinated against the H1N1 flu will need a second dose to fully protect them against the virus.
“There is some protection from one dose, but there is a significant increase of immunity with the second dose,” district nurse manager Clarizza Carroll said.
The health department recommends that the booster dose be given 28 days or later after the first dose. Health officials said there is no reason to worry about minor delays between the first and second doses.
Older children and adults have more developed immune systems and need only a single dose.
Carroll urged parents of students who were among the first in the area to be immunized in mid-October to get a second dose of vaccine for their children now. A limited supply of vaccine for both children and adults is available at the Carter County Health Department. Some private health care providers have also received a limited supply of vaccine.
Parents may call the health department at (580) 223-9705 to check on the availability of H1N1 vaccine or call their medical provider to schedule a booster vaccination.
