Sgt. Patrick James and Cpl. Randy O’Hanlon have been named the recipients of the Ardmore Police Department’s new Officer of the Quarter award.
“Each quarter, officers within the police department are asked to nominate fellow officers for recognition of outstanding work or outstanding dedication to service or the public. An officer of the quarter may not always be named, this time there were two chosen for the honor,” said APD Chief Keith Mann.
- Sgt. James
Officers responded to a call of an armed robbery about noon Dec. 20. During this robbery a purse was taken and one shot fired into the ground. About 2 p.m. James observed a vehicle matching the description of the suspect vehicle in the 1200 block of South Commerce Street.
“The vehicle was occupied by two subjects matching the robbery suspects’ descriptions. Sgt. James stopped the vehicle. During the subsequent investigation and search it was determined these were the suspects in the robbery and the property was recovered,” Mann said.
James called the Officer of the Quarter award an unexpected honor.
“I was surprised and I’m very pleased. It’s an honor to have been selected for this new award, especially since it is based on a nomination by my peers,” James said.
- Cpl. O’Hanlon
“O’Hanlon volunteers his time and effort each Thursday to assist in the training of our canines. He wears a bite suit and acts as the ‘bad guy’ for our canines to subdue. He has assisted the K-9 unit with training for several months without any compensation or benefits. This training is very tiresome and is hard work but he has never missing a training day with the unit,” Mann said.
While O’Hanlon said he was delighted to have been named an Officer of the Quarter, he credited his fellow officers with his success.
“I am honored to have been chosen. However, I want to personally thank all of the officers who everyday go out and do a great job. I couldn’t do my job without the officers I serve with,” he said.
Those named Officer of the Quarter receive a gift certificate.,
“The gift certificate is our small way of recognizing a job well done, and saying thank you for the effort they have given,” Mann said.
