A 19-year-old Ardmore man is behind bars, charged with raping a 13-year-old girl.
Assistant District Attorney Brad Noland filed a first-degree rape charge Thursday against Garen Eugene Thompson in Carter County District Court. The charge accuses Thompson of raping the child Monday night at a local residence. Thompson made an initial appearance before Special District Judge Thomas Baldwin the same day the charge was filed. Bond was set at $20,000.
Thompson was charged based on an investigation conducted by the Ardmore Police Department. Det. Phil Shepard, APD Criminal Investigation Division, said police were alerted Wednesday after the victim told an Ardmore teacher about the attack.
Sgt. Paul White, APD Patrol Division, took the initial report and notified APD-CID. Shepard was assigned the case.
“I met with the victim and her mom at C/SARA (Child Advocacy Center) where interviews and the investigation continued. Paul then interviewed the suspect and placed him under arrest,” Shepard said.
At the time of his arrest, Thompson was booked into the Carter County Detention Center. He remains jailed pending the posting of bond. A preliminary hearing conference is set for 9 a.m. Nov. 24.
Thompson was the second Carter County resident to be charged with child rape last week.
Diana Kay Mills, 37, Healdton was charged Wednesday with rape in a case involving two teenage boys. She too remains jailed at the Carter County Detention Center pending the posting of a $25,000 bond.
C/SARA statistics indicate the Child Advocacy Center served 142 child victims of sex crimes in 2008. So far this year, the number has risen to 188 in the five counties (Carter, Johnston, Love, Marshall and Murray) C/SARA serves. Out of the 188 sex crime cases, 102 cases involve child victims in Carter County.
