Carter County will join the ranks of those honoring their Purple Heart veterans.
The county commissioners approved a proclamation declaring Carter County as a Purple Heart County during their weekly meeting Monday morning. With passage of the proclamation, the county hopes to have signs by Veterans Day.
Chairman Bill Baker said the county said the effort had been spearheaded by Sen. Jerry Alvord.
“I am very happy this is happening,” he said. “It is an honor to recognize our veterans, especially our Purple Heart veterans. It puts Carter County on the map.”
Alvord began working to have the county declared as a Purple Heart County five years ago, when he served as the county commissioner.
“They said it was not normal that the county would take the first step,” Alvord said. “After seeing Ardmore become a Purple Heart City, I checked again and they were open to it. They have worked with the county, and I appreciate the commissioners for their work in recognizing the sacrifices of our Purple Heart veterans.”
The agenda was light with the typical approvals for reports, requisitions and purchase orders. At the conclusion of the meeting, Commissioner Berry Lee-Brinkman provided an update on this month’s Circuit Engineering District meeting.
There were updates provided as far as the Association of County Commissioners. There is $1.8 million available through the Emergency and Transportation Revolving Fund, which was discussed during the meeting. Lee-Brinkman said concerns about insurance were also discussed. ACCO representatives will also have a meeting in September for area commissioners to attend.
