A show worth melting for: ALT Summer Youth Theatre presents “Disney’s Frozen Jr.”

The recent hot, steamy days have us all longing to retreat into a magical ice palace.

Unfortunately such an escape is only possible in fairytales, but that’s exactly what Ardmore Little Theatre’s Summer Youth Theatre is bringing this weekend with “Disney’s Frozen Jr.”

The musical is a slightly abridged version of the 2013 film that tells the story of royal sisters Anna and Elsa. Elsa has magical powers of snow and ice which she struggles to control. On the day of her coronation as queen, she accidentally creates an eternal winter for her kingdom. Fearing causing more harm, Elsa flees into the mountains to live a life of solitude, and Anna goes on a quest to find her. Along the way, Anna is joined by Ice Salesman Kristoff, his reindeer Sven, and Olaf the snowman.

The cast of young actors ranging in age from 11 to 17 and Director Jenna Elmer did an excellent job of bringing the film to the stage. I thoroughly enjoyed myself when I attended dress rehearsal Wednesday afternoon. Many of the songs from the film are included, and you can tell the cast really spent some time learning the songs and rather intricate dance numbers.

The show stars Teddy Pfau as Elsa, Chloe Probst as Anna, Ethan Ellis as Kristoff, Jackson Oblander as Olaf and Addie Davidson as Sven. My favorite performance had to be Oblander in his role as Olaf. As the youngest member of the primary cast, his performance was excellent, and he truly has a knack for comedic timing and delivery.

Performances of “Disney’s Frozen Jr.” will be at the Goddard Center this weekend at 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and a Sunday matinee is scheduled 2 p.m. Tickets are $8 for students and $12 for adults and can be purchased online at ardmorelittletheater.com.
