Elmer Herbert Marsh, 90, died Tuesday, November 23, 2010, in Norman.


The son of James Edward and Cora (Clement) Marsh, he was born August 7, 1920, in Blanchard, Okla. At the age of five, his family settled in the Earl, Okla., area, also known as Hell’s Hole. He graduated from Mannsville High School. On May 16, 1942, he married Juanita West, to this union was born four children.


He served in the U.S. Army Air Corp 88th Troop Carrier Squadron as a glider mechanic from January 1943 to Sept. 1945. He began a career with the Federal Government at Gene Autry Air Force Base as an aircraft painter. Upon the closure of the base in 1957, he moved his family to the Oklahoma City area and worked at the FAA until his retirement in 1981 with 28 years of service.


Herbert loved family life. He was involved in scouting with his sons. He served as scout master and was respected by all the members of his troop.


After the death of his children’s mother, he married Ora Calloway in Ardmore in 1998. They were active in several senior centers in the area and volunteered many hours. After Ora’s death he returned to the Norman area residing at the Oklahoma Veterans Center.


He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, W.L., R.J. and James Edward “P’Nut”; sister, Trulene Foster; wife, Juanita; wife, Ora; and daughter-in-law, Connie.


He is survived by his brother, Cecil and Cheryl of Newalla; sister-in-law, Wilma of Mannsville; brother-in-law, Charles Foster of Mannsville; his children: son, Allen and Carolynn of Kittery, Maine, daughter, Jackie and Leon Barnard of Norman, Okla., son, Rodney and Cara of Norman, and son, Kevin of Wanette; 13 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and one due in January.


Visitation will be Friday, November 26, 2010, at the Watts Funeral Home in Madill at 8 a.m.


Services will be Friday, November 26, 2010, at 2 p.m. at the Watts Memorial Chapel, Madill, Oklahoma. Ricky Belicek will officiate the services. Interment will be at the Lone Cedar Cemetery, Mannsville, Oklahoma. Services will be under the direction of Watts Funeral Home, Kingston, Oklahoma.


Casket bearers are Rex Marsh, Jared Marsh, Lex Marsh, Jacob Marsh, Tex Marsh and Lonnie Marsh.
Honorary bearers are Cheris Jones and Leon Barnard.
