Mr. Thompson was born January 7, 1921, in Leslie, Ark., the son of Victor Herbert Thompson Sr. and Dewey Richey Thompson. He passed away Wednesday, October 26, 2011, in Mercy Health Love County, Marietta.

 

A graduate of Marietta High School, Mr. Thompson had lived here his entire life except for only a few years in St. Louis, Mo., and while serving in the U.S. Army. While living in St. Louis he had a tryout with the St. Louis Browns professional baseball team but chose to enlist in the Army. As a veteran of WWII, he served in the Rhineland, Aleutian Islands and Central Europe and was awarded three Bronze Stars for those campaigns in addition to the Good Conduct Medal. After returning to Love County, he was employed by the State of Oklahoma as a game warden and manager of the Hickory Creek Wildlife Refuge. Mr. Thompson was a gunsmith and also enjoyed woodworking.

 

One of his favorite pastimes was drinking coffee with friends at local restaurants. He was a member of the Marietta Church of Christ.

 

Mr. Thompson was married to Billie Jean Bybee on December 24, 1952, in Gainesville, Texas, and she preceded him in death on November 4, 2010. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; brother-in-law, Vernon Griffin; and great-nephew and namesake, Richey Jean Robbins.

 

Survivors include a brother and sister-in-law, Victor H. and Barbara Thompson of Marietta; sister, Alyne Griffin of Marietta; two nieces, Janie Caldwell and Vickie Rushing of Marietta; three nephews, Tommy Griffin and Roger Griffin and wife, Becki and Everett Tanner, all of Ardmore, Okla.; and a host of great-nieces and nephews and special friends.

 

Serving as honorary bearers will be Bob Brock, Mike Worsham, Vance Parr, Allen Woody, Danny Frazier, John Thompson and employees of the Department of Wildlife.
Viewing will be from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. today and 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
