Ardmore police and area law enforcement agencies continue the investigation in sex abuse allegations against a local businessman.

Allen McKendrick was taken into custody Thursday by Ardmore Police Department detectives. He was booked into the Carter County Detention Center pending charges of lewd acts and rape. But Friday District Attorney Craig Ladd declined filing formal charges against the downtown Ardmore book store owner, saying he was asking investigators for a  “supplemental” investigation.

“Investigative reports were delivered to our office late yesterday (Thursday afternoon) and I reviewed these reports last night. These reports pertain to allegations which were first made on October 12, 2011. In my opinion, the information contained in this first set of investigative reports is insufficient to support the formal filing of criminal charges,” Ladd said.

“However, the investigation is still ongoing and our office is working closely with the investigators assigned to the case. When the supplemental investigation is completed, I will evaluate the matter again for consideration of criminal charges.”

Ardmore Police Department Public Information Officer Sgt. Ryan Hunnicutt said Friday the inquiry surrounding the 49-year-old Wilson resident includes a number of teenage victims.  Hunnicutt also said the case had expanded into other law enforcement jurisdictions.

“We are coordinating with area agencies concerning other alleged acts in other jurisdictions,” he said. “While this case involves several locations APD investigators initiated the case based on accusations that allegedly occurred at his  business in the downtown Ardmore area.”

McKendrick was released from the county jail Friday afternoon pending the outcome of the investigation.
